Acupuncture is an effective, holistic health care system developed by the Chinese over 3,000 years ago. It involves the insertion of ultra thin needles into designated points on the body. The acupuncture points are located on a network of energy pathways called meridians. The energy that is carried through these meridians is called “qi” (pronounced “chee”). Sometimes the meridians can become blocked, or the qi is exhausted. When qi is not flowing freely, pain and illness result. Acupuncture works by adjusting the flow of qi to restore balance and health.
Acupuncture treats the whole person. Your practitioner will look at all the signs and symptoms in order to come up with a correct diagnosis. Then she will work to improve the flow of qi, relieve symptoms, and restore wellness. The balance of qi is reflected in each person’s physical, mental and spiritual health. Being healthy means having the vitality, energy and spirit to live life to the fullest.
In Oriental medicine, essence, energy, and spirit are known as the Three Treasures. They are cultivated by living a balanced life, including: proper diet, correct breathing, exercise in moderation, adequate rest, limiting stress and managing the emotions. Oriental medicine seeks to help preserve and enhance the Three Treasures, thus promoting and restoring health. How it Works: Acupuncture works by strengthening the body’s own natural healing abilities. It increases circulation and stimulates the immune system to facilitate healing. It also affects the nervous system, causing the release of chemicals that have balancing, calming and pain relieving effects.
